On September 6, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki published an essay titled "An Alien Mind" on the company's website. In the piece, Pachocki expressed the view that during the phase of scaling AI development, it would be desirable for companies to voluntarily slow down development until common standards for ensuring safety are in place.

Pachocki touched upon the possibility of "recursive self-improvement," where AI drives its own further development. He also expressed concern that monitoring methods using "Chain-of-Thought," which observe the inference process through which a model arrives at an answer, are becoming less reliable as model capabilities improve and the inference scope expands.

He stated that there is an urgent need to build defense systems powered by strong and safe AI to prepare for risks such as AI-driven cyberattacks. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared Pachocki's post, describing it as important and expressing his support.
